OH91
A key figure in Bristol’s tighly-knit music community, OH91 has blossomed as a producer since first bursting onto the scene back in 2011. Sharpening his production skills alongside the likes of fellow Bristolians Kahn & Neek, Boofy, Lemzly Dale, Hi5Ghost and Joker — as well as good friend Royal-T — OH91 has benefited from the myriad sounds that have developed around him over the last six years. With a series of releases on Bristol-based independents Durkle Disco and Subdepth Records checking his early progress, he announced his full debut proper via Coyote Records in 2013.
‘Stealth’ — a hard, thugged-out club jam aimed squarely at the floor and backed up by a remix from iconic grime vet Spooky — was the first to alert the wider scene to his potential. Boosted by a live guest mix slot on Royal-T’s Rinse FM show and a host of slipstream club bookings, ‘Stealth’ gave him the platform from which to solidify his status as one of grime’s premiere young beat-makers.
Fast forward to 2014 and ‘Goon Mode’ — a heavier, trappier beat — was snapped up by White Peach and released on a 12” plate as part of four-track sampler ‘Peach Bits Vol.1’, whilst behind the scenes, OH91 had started to look into producing more for MCs. By now a regular visitor to London and under the watch of influential figures like Sir Spyro and Grandmixxer, tracks were recorded with MCs like Kwam and MIK, the latter of whom released ‘New Ting’ ft. fellow Family Tree MC Ego — a track produced by OH91 — as part of his album/mixtape, ‘Ghostwriter’. He’s since also worked with Spyro and Lil Nasty on 2014 single, ‘I’m Heavy’.
The instrumental in question on ‘New Ting’ was incidentally OH91’s flip of classic Rapid instrumental, ‘Xtra’, a track that also sure OH91 return to Coyote Records alongside label-mate Chemist at the back end of 2014. Released as a two-track white label — a record that also launched Coyote’s ‘WHT’ series — ‘Xtra91’ sold out in less than 10 days.
Releases on Manchester indie start-up Trapped Audio and a return to White Peach with latest EP, ‘Skanks’, in 2016, continued his solid run of releases, while debuts on Boiler Room and at fabric as part of Coyote Records showcases also pointed to his pedigree as a DJ.
With more MC-based work scheduled for 2017, as well as first ever Asia tour in March, OH91 continues to build and better himself year-on-year.
