今から20年前、オランダ・アムステルダムに小さなレコードショップがオープンした。お店の名前は「Rush Hour」（以下RH）。今でこそ老舗レコードショップであり、名門レーベルとして成功している組織ではあるが、その成り立ちや道のりはどのようなものだったのだろうか 20周年を記念して世界中を旅して回る彼らをRainbow Disco Club 2017で直撃取材。レーベルメイトのことをファミリーと呼び、彼らの周りには常に笑い声が絶えなかったのが印象的だった。Rush Hour特集第2弾はシカゴのディスコレジェンドSadar Bahar。急遽San Properも加わって話はドライブしていく。
20 years ago, a small record shop called ‘Rush Hour’ (RH) opened in the small street of Amsterdam, Netherlands. People today recognizes RH as an established record store and a label, but what is their history? We were fortunate enough to catch up with them at Rainbow Disco Club 2017 during their 20th anniversary tour taking place around the globe. Happiness and laughter spilled out as history started to unfold, and we realized why they refer their fellow label mates as ‘family’. Second up is with Chicago Disco legend Sadar Bahar. San Proper joins in, and the conversation just kept going.

——SadarはAntalと出会ったころのことを覚えていますか？
（Sadar, do you remember the first time you met Antal?）
Sadar：Paradiso（アムステルダムにあるライブハウス）でのパーティーだな。Antalに呼ばれたんだ。何年も前のことだよ。
（When I came out to do Paradiso (live house in Amsterdam). Antal had me come. Many years ago.）
San：Paradisoはもともと教会で、それをライブハウスにリノベーションしたところだよ。そういう意味ではすごい箱だよ。ただクラブという意味ではちょっと違うかな。バンドのライブ音楽に適したデザインだけど、やっぱりクラブ特有の怪しさはない。Paradisoで「Paradisco 2000」というパーティーをやっていて、2000年からは「Paradisco 3000」に名前を変えて続けてたよ。RHはこのイベントでBoo WilliamsとかTheo Parrishをオランダに呼んだんだ。ちなみに、RHはオフロケーションでもパーティーをやっていたよ。汚い地下室とか、スクワット（違法に人々が住んでいる廃墟など）とか。そうやってRHは“アンダーグランド感”を保ち続けていたんだ。
（Paradiso used to be a church, then flipped it into a live house. They are legendary for that. It doesn’t really have the club vibe though. Legendary design for band and live music but doesn’t really have the grimey and dirty club vibe. RH did parties called ‘Paradisco 2000’ here, and after the millennium it changed into ‘Paradisco 3000’. They were the first to book Boo Williams, Theo Parrish, bunch of artists like that. RH also did off-location parties too. Dirty grimy cellars, squats, and stuff like that. That’s how they kept the ‘underground vibe’ that RH embodies.）
——Sadarはレーベルブッキングエージェンシー「Sound Familiar」のフロントマンですが、あなたから見てRHはどんな存在ですか？
（Sadar, your the front man of the label and booking agency ‘Sound Familiar’. With that in mind, what is the significance of RH?）
Sadar：いい音楽を見つける力、成功／売れる音楽を見つける力、人々からリスペクトをされる音楽をRHからいっぱい学んだよ。ある意味、成功を共有してきた感じもする。RHがうまくいってて、Sound Familiarもうまくいっていて。今後もこれが続く気がするよ。
（Antal is real good at having an ear for good music, music that works and people appreciate. I learned a lot from him. We share the wealth, our label is doing good and RH is doing good. You will see a lot more coming from the both of us.）
——Sound Familiarのホームページに“私たちは、まだ世間に知られていないけれど、世界の音楽のトレンドやクラブの歴史に名を刻んできた才能あるアーティストたちを広めていくことを選びました”と書かれていますね。
（On the ‘Sound Familiar’ homepage is says, “We choose to represent artists whose significance may not be known to the masses, but whose influences on global music trends and club histories are both inherent and indelible”. What does this mean?）
Sadar：自分たちがやっている音楽は普通より深い所を探っていて、スピリチュアルな要素も持っている。だから普通の人が理解するまでには少し時間がかかるけど、一方で好きな人には、すぐに理解してこういう音楽を愛してくれる。音楽はみんなの為にあるものだ。俺はいつも「音楽は世界共通の言語」って言ってるよ。人々を繋げたりするからね。オープンマインドでいろんな音楽を経験すべきだよ。Duke Ellingtonが言ったように“There’s only two music, good and bad（音楽には2つの種類しかない。良いか悪いか）”。いろいろ試してほしい。最後に何が好きになるか分からないからね。
（Our music, we try to go deeper than usual or almost somewhere spiritual. It take regular people some time to catch on but people that loves it will jump right on. I always say “Music is the universal language”, it brings people together. You got to be open and wild when it comes to music and experience different types of music. Like Duke Ellington said “There’s only two music, good and bad”, so try everything, never know what you might like.）
——SadarはRHから新曲のEPをリリースするそうですね。
（Sadar, you are going to release a new EP from RH right?）
Sadar：そうそう、Ben Spaanderとたくさんトラックを制作してきたから。ようやく世に出せれて、リスナーがなんて言うか楽しみだよ。まずはRH限定でリリースして、それから他のところでもリリースされるよ。
（Yes, me and my friend Ben Spaander, we’ve been working on a lot of music over the years so now it’s time to get it out and see either people will like it. Released on RH first, and then everywhere else later on.）

——ちなみにSadarとSanの出会いは？
（How did you two meet?）
San：それはプライベートの内容だからちょっと…
（That’s private so...）
Sadar：そうそうプライベート（笑）。シカゴにプライベートなミーティングをしに来たんだ。
（Yes, it’s private! He came to Chicago and we had a private meeting.）
San：初めてシカゴに行ったとき、Rahaanを通じて知り合ったんだ。Rahaanはオレの大好きなDJの一人で、自分のパーティーにも出てもらっていた。その関係もあって、シカゴに行ったときに案内してくれたんだ。それで彼にMr Peabody（シカゴにあったレコードショップ、現在は閉店）に行きたい、Sadar Baharに会いたいってお願いしたんだ。Sadarはシカゴ、ソウル、ディスコのレジェンドの一人だよ。俺にとってもね。Antalも同じ気持ちだよ。そしてRHファミリーとして10年以上も関わってきたんだよ。
（The first time I came to Chicago, Rahaan introduced me. He’s one of my favorite DJs and booked him a couple times myself. He told me the moment you arrive in Chicago, “Hit me up, I want to show you what Chicago is all about”. I said to him I want to go to Mr Peabody (legendary record store in Chicago, now closed), and I want to meet Sadar Bahar. Sadar is a Chicago, soul, disco legend you know. To me definitely, and for Antal as well. He has been part of the RH family for more than a decade.）
——「Rainbow Disco Club 2017」の全体的なラインアップはどうですか？
（What do you think of the line-up of Rainbow Disco Club 2017 as a whole?）
San：Rainbow Disco Clubのラインナップ全体は、RHが表現しようとしている音楽を表している。まさにファミリーだね。3日目にRHスペシャルをやるのであれば、Sadarをスペシャルゲストとして呼ぶことに疑いの余地はないよ。
（The whole line-up of Rainbow Disco Club fits perfectly with the sound that RH embodies. It’s family. If you want to come up with a RH third day, having Sadar as a special guest makes perfect sense.）
——RH作品でとくに気に入っている作品を教えてください。
（What is your favorite work from RH?）
Sadar：ひとつを挙げるとしたらKindred Spirits（アフリカン、アフロビートを中心としたRHのサブレーベル）からリリースされたSun Raの「Space is the Place」の別バージョンかな。通常の映画のサントラとは違うバージョンがKindred Spiritsから限定で販売されていたんだよ。
（If I had to choose, one of my favorite is a different version of Sun Ra’s ‘Space is the Place’. It’s not the regular version from the movies,but a limited edition on Kindred Spirits.）
San：オレもその質問に答えていいか？ オレは2009年にリリースされたあのすごいトラックかな……「Proper’s A’dam’s Family Series」ってシリーズで……トラックの名前は「Twif Pa」で……アーティストはSteven the Peven (Awanto 3)とSan Proper
（May I answer that question too? I remember this amazing track, I think it was released in 2009. I think it was in the …’Proper’s A’dam Family Series’, and...I remember the artist being Steven the Peven (Awanto 3) and San Proper, ...and the track was called ‘Twif Pa’!）
——自分の作品じゃないですか（笑）
（That’s your release!）
San：すごくいいトラックだよ、それでも全然売れなかったんだよ。だからお願い、オンラインストアで買ってくれ。あれのせいでまだお金がない状況だよ（笑）。
（That was off the hook! But it didn’t sell! So please, buy it online! I’m still broke because of that.）
——最後にRHへメッセージをお願いします。
（Lastly, please give us a message for RH.）
Sadar：RHファミリー、今までの本当にありがとうこの20周年をファミリーとして祝えることを誇りに思うよ。自分もファミリーの一員だしね。今までやって来たことをそのまま続けてくれ、愛してるよ。そして「Keep your Soul in the Hole常にソウルを」
（RH family, thank you for all the love! I’m very proud and happy to see all of you celebrating the 20th anniversary. Well, I must say ‘us’ because I’m part of the family too. I’m very proud of you guys, and keep up the good work, and I love you! ‘Keep your Soul in the Hole!’）
San：渋滞にハマりたくなければ、脇道をチェックしな。じゃないとRush Hourにハマっちゃぞ……いや、今のはダメだ、胡散臭いな。大好きだよ、自分にとって貴重なものだし、RHがなかったら変なホームレスになっていたよ。次は40周年を狙わないと、先は明るいよ。いい音楽だらけだし、店舗で働いている人々は素晴らしいし。RHはコミュニティーで「機関」なんだよ。
（If you don’t want to get caught up in traffic, check the detor. Or else you're going to get in the Rush Hour...no, that was lame. I just love it, it’s the best thing in the world to me. I would be a silly homeless without RH. We have to aim for another 40 years, I’m sure that’s going to happen because there’s so much crazy good releases and beautiful people working at the store. RH is a community, an ‘institution’.）
