Slam (Soma Records)
UKの屈指の名門テクノレーベル"Soma Records"レーベルオーナーである、Orde MeikleとStuart McMillanが組んだユニット「SLAM」。
スコットランド最大の産業都市グラスゴーは、UKのデトロイトといわれるほど、数多くのミュージシャンを輩出している。その中でも本物のインディー精神を貫き通しながら、レコード不況の中でも、絶大な支持を誇るのが"Soma Records"なのだ。
"Soma Records"は、1991年の初リリースに始まり、これまでに250タイトル以上のシングル、75枚以上のアルバムをリリースしており、さまざまな アーティストを発掘し、世に発信してきた。Silicone Soul、Funk D'Void、Alex Smoke、Master H、Vector Lovers、Percy X aka Edit-Select、そしてDaft Punkなど、彼らがシーンに排出してきたアーティストは数知れない。
治安が悪いといわれるグラスゴーのスラム街で生き抜いたタフさは、彼らの織りなすグルーヴに現れており、デトロイトを彷彿とさせる太いファンキーなベースラインにねじれる上音、そしてハードかつディープに突き進むスタイルで常にシーンに影響を与えてきた。
自 らのコアなスタイルは崩さずに流行の音を取り入れた、ベテランならではの職人らしさが溢れるトラックは、Sven Vath、Carl Craig、Richie Hawtinなど数々のアーティストがDJセットに使用している。またRadio SlaveやSashaなど幅広いアーティストからのリミックスオファーも絶えない。
近年は「Monegros」「Oxygen」 「Bestival」「10 days off」「Extrema」「Glastonbury」「T In The Park」といった世界中のビッグフェス、そして"Womb"、"Cocoon"、"Rex"、"Watergate"、"Berghain"といった名 門クラブに引っ張りだことなっており、忙しいツアー生活をおくっている。

―まずは、未だ厳しい状況下で生活を送っている、東日本大震災被災者の方へのメッセージが何かあれば、お聞かせいただけますか？
僕らは世界中のほかの人々がそう思ったように、「信じられない」という気持ちで、はるか向こうで起きている災害の甚大さを見守っていたよ。映像や写真はとても恐ろしいものだったから、被害に遭われたみなさんへの想いは計り知れないよ。一刻も早い復旧を願うとともに、日本という国が自身の力で立ち上がり歩む、強さと円熟した環境を持っていることを信じているよ。
―トラックリストを教えていただけますか？
トラックの大半はプロモであったり、この何週間か前にクラブでライブ録音した未発表曲であったりして、よく覚えていない楽曲のコンビネーションなんだ。それに、楽曲がリリースされる前に秘密兵器のことは明かしたくないんだよね！
―使用機材を教えてください。
TRAKTOR、TRAKTOR KONTROL X1、Allen and HeathのXone92だよ。
―このミックスはどこで録音したものですか？
これは、グラスゴーの"The Arches"というクラブで開催されている僕たちのレジデントパーティー「Pressure」で録音されたものなんだ。この夜はリッチー・ホウティンと一緒にギグをしてね、僕らは彼のためのウォーミングアップだったんだけど、彼は期待通りフロアをロックしてくれたよ！満杯の状態でクラウドをウォームアップさせるのはとてもよかったよ。ここ何年も押し寄せるほどの人がパーティーに来てくれるけど、みんなすばらしいよ。
―このミックスのコンセプトなどがあれば教えてください。
クラウドを試そうとしたんだ。最初はディープでダビーなサウンドから始めて、徐々にエナジー溢れるハウスやテクノをおりまぜていったんだ。だが、そのようにしつつも、あとに控えるリッチーが華やかに見えるように、静けさを維持した。この夜は3時間プレイしたんだけど、このミックスはちょど2時間目にあたる部分だよ。
―近況と最近の活動について教えてください。
たくさんありすぎて挙げきれないよ！ここ何ヶ月かはずっと忙しかったよ。僕らのレーベル"Soma Records"は20周年をむかえるんだけど、アニバーサリーパーティーやボックスセットのリリースに向けて、準備や計画がずっとカオスな状態なんだ！あとは「Timewarp」「Mayday」といったすばらしい場所でのライブを行ったよ。
―今後のリリースの予定を教えてください。
これから先、数ヶ月に渡ってリリースが続くね。僕ら自身もサブレーベルの"Paragraph"から「The Tritone」というEPを6月下旬にリリースするんだ。大箱用のテクノだね。この曲は本当に楽しみながら作ったし、プレイすることはなおのこと大好きだよ！あとAdam Beyerのレーベル"Drumcode"からリリースするEPも仕上げたばかりだ。この作品は、前に彼のレーベルからリリースした2作品に続くものだよ。
加えて、Soma Recordsの20周年記念ボックスセットに収録するDJミックスも収録し終わったところだよ。20年目となる今年は、クラシックトラックや、隠れた名作をバックカタログから再認識しようと思っているんだ。DJ Sneak、Wolf + Lamb、Radio Slave、Kenny Larkin、Adam Beyer、Pan-Pot、その他大勢といったアーティストたちがこれに参加してくれて、彼らのお気に入りのトラックをピックし、リミックスをしてくれているんだ。
このDJミックスでは、僕らのお気に入りの楽曲に、彼らがリワークを施したものを流れるようなフローで織り込んでいる。僕らもこの出来栄えにすごく満足しているよ。
―今後のギグの予定は？
ここしばらく忙しいんだけど、ドイツの「Timewarp」や「Mayday」といったフェスでプレイしてきてね。初めてのライブパフォーマンスをここで行ったんだけど、そのための準備に長い時間を費やしてきたんだ。
今後はバルセロナの「Sonar」のときに、La Terrrazzaというところでレーベルショーケース「Soma Party」をやるよ。あとは「Glade Festival」、スペインの「Freshweekend Festival」、オランダの「Future Festival」、スコットランドの「T In The Park」そして「Scottish Festival」では15,000人規模の"SLAM Tent"もやるよ。
クラブはバルセロナの"The Loft"、イビサの"Space"そして、僕らのレジデントであるグラスゴーの「Pressure」と、もうひとつグラスゴーの「Return To Mono」、そしてもちろんロンドンの伝説的クラブ"Fabric"でのギグも忘れちゃいけないね。
―来日の予定はありますか？
とっても行きたいよ！君たちが考えるよりもっと早く行けることを願ってるよ！

―Can you give Japanese people a message for those who have been under the pressure from the earthquake and other troubles caused by the earthquake?
We watched along with the rest of the world in disbelief at the scale of the disaster over there. We can't express how much our hearts go out to everyone effected, some of the images were terrifying. We wish the people of Japan a speedy recovery and have faith that the country has the maturity and strength to pick themselves up and get back on their feet.
―Can you share us the track list for this mix?
The tracks were mostly a bunch of promos and unreleased tracks recorded live in a club, a couple of weeks ago, its a combination of we forget the track names and we dont want to give away our secret weapons before they are released!
―What recording equipments have you used to record this mix? ex. SL-1200, XONE92, etc.

―How and where did you record it?
This was recorded live at our club night in Glasgow, "Pressure" at a venue called The Arches. On this night, we were warming up for Ritchie Hawtin, who wrecked the place as expected! We had a full house for this, its always great to play the warm up to our home crowd. Pressure people have been coming for years, and are an amazing crowd.
―Can you tell us the idea or concept behind this mix?
We try to judge the crowd, taking it from deep and dubby early on to a more energetic blend of house and techno, but keep it consistent and calm enough to give Hawtin the space to shine after we finish. Overall we played for 3 hours on this night, this mix is the second hour of the night!
―What have you been working on recently?
Too much to mention! It has been such a busy few months. Soma Records, our label, is 20 years old this year so it has been chaos with all of the plans and preparations for the celebrations, box set and so on. We have also taken our live show on the road, playing amazing places like timewarp, mayday, and so on,
―If you're releasing a new album or EP, please tell us about the concept, or episodes, etc.
We have lots coming out over the coming months including our new release on our Paragraph imprint, The Tritone. This is big room techno. We love making it and enjoy playing it even more! We’ve also just finished an EP for Adam Beyer’s Drumcode label. This follows up our last 2 EPs we’ve done for him.
On top of that we have also just finihsed our DJ mix that will be included in the Soma Records 20 Years Boxset. During our 20th year we thought we would revisit some of the classics and hidden gems from our back catalogue. Artists like DJ Sneak, Wolf + Lamb, Radio Slave, Kenny Larkin, Adam Beyer, Pan-Pot and many more are all involved in the celebrations, picking their favourite track and remixing it for us.
The idea behind our DJ mix is to weave together a flowing mix of some of our favourite reworks from these artists. We are really pleased with how it has come out.
―Can you tell us your future gig/tour schedules?
It’s been a busy few months, playing Live at Timewarp and Mayday Festivals in Germany. These gigs were our first Live performances in a while, so we had to spend a long time working on them. In the coming months we will have our annual Soma Party @ La Terrrazza in Barcelona for Sonar, the Glade Festival, Freshweekend Festival in Spain, Munich, our 15,000 capacity ‘SLAM Tent’ at the Scottish Festival, T In The Park. Plus also Welcome to the Future Festival in Holland, The Loft in Barcelona, Space in Ibiza, our monthly club nights Pressure and Return To Mono in Glasgow, and of course the legendary Fabric in London.
―Any plan to come to Japan?
