ー伝説のユニット、PRANAの再起動などこの数年活動が多岐に渡っていることと思います。コロナが落ち着いてからの活動について教えてください。また、外国での活動についてはどうですか？
はい、おかげさまでコロナが落ち着いてからは、通常の活動に完全に戻っています。
ー国内のパーティーシーンはどんな状況でしょうか。
2000年初頭に比べれば、規模的には小さいですが、毎週末若い世代のオーガナイズするイベントも含めて増えて来てますし、徐々に大きくなっていっている事を実感しています。

ー最近最も印象に残ったフェス・パーティーはどれですか？またその理由は？
やはり、毎年行われている、ハンガリーのO.Z.O.R.A. Festival ですかね。あと、ポルトガルのZNAもオールドスクールに対する若い人たちの熱量に感動しました。国内ではいのちの祭りと天竺は歴史あるイベント故の安定感がありましたね。
ー今後控えているパーティーやフェスについて。お勧めなどを教えてください。
12月は地元西多摩のおおばキャンプ村で、全方位ヒートアップシステムを使いフロアを20度に保って行う WINTER RAVEが12月21日−22日に開催されます。常にお世話になっている高円寺CaveとOUROBOROSが主催の野外パーティーです。Flying Rhinoのオーナー、James Monroが日本に来ますね。また10月半ばに関西で行われるGAIAも注目して欲しいフェスです。

ーマンツーマンのDJ Master Classをはじめると聞きました。そのきっかけは？
きっかけは、多数の人たちから是非DJのスキルを教えて欲しいという声があるのと、自分以外のある程度のキャリアがあるDJさんたちが伸び悩んでいるという話しをよく聞いているという事もありますね。

ーメインの会場となるViolettaについて教えてください。
最初は、以前講師をしていたIDPSの時からの付き合いがあり、今DJスクールを自分で展開している DJのMichiruがオーガナイズしたトークショーでお伺いしたことがきっかけでした。渋谷にあり、音もよく、サイズ感としてもアンダーグラウンドな感じがして、とても良い場所です。

ーMaster Classではどんな授業を行う予定ですか？
キャリア3年以上のDJを対象に、シュミレーションミックスをしてもらい、それを踏まえて自分が細かいアドバイスをして行きます。
ーMaster Classに参加する人へのメッセージをお願いします。
僕の経験や自分が持っているシーンへのコネクションも生かして頂きたいですし、生徒さんたちのDJミックスに関する悩みなどの相談に乗りますし、受講後必ずや今後に活かせるレッスンをして行きますので、何卒宜しくお願い致します！
ーDJを目指す若い世代へメッセージをお願いします。
何を表現したいか・何を目指して行くのかを明確に持つことだと思うのです。
それを軸に頑張って欲しいと思います。
ーMatsuri として、レーベルが30周年を迎えますが、レーベルについてもお話し聞かせてください。
MATSURI は自分が94年にロンドンで始めたレーベルです。2000年に拠点を東京に移しました。2000年代に入って、今はテクノシーンで活躍しているLiquid Drop GrooveのYUTAの一声でMatsuri Digitalとして復活し、今はレーベルDJでもあるHRKことHirokoちゃんと共にレーベル活動として多数のイベントやリリースを重ねています。もうすぐ盟友でもあるUNIのアルバムのリリースもありますし、Matsuri Digitalとして独自のサウンド、世界観を今後も提案していきたいと思っています。
30周年記念としては、11月に大阪、そしてホームグラウンドでもある高円寺Caveでパーティーを開催予定です！
ー最後にDJとしての今後の展望、レーベルオーナーとしての今後の展望などをお聞かせください。
今後の展望としては、30年ぶりに復活したPRANAの更なる活動のアクティビティ、そして、更なる他のアーティスト達のリリースなど、変わらずやって行きたいと思っています。宜しくお願い致します！
Intervew in English
ーYou’ve been involved in a variety of activities over the past few years, including the revival of the legendary PRANA. Can you tell us what you’ve been up to since things started getting back to normal after the pandemic? How about your work abroad?
Yeah, thankfully, things are back to normal now, and I’ve resumed my usual activities.
ーHow’s the party scene in Japan right now?
It’s still smaller than it was in the early 2000s, but I’ve noticed more and more parties every weekend. The crowd is growing, especially with younger people getting involved, so I think the scene will continue to expand.
ーWhich festival or party has left the biggest impression on you recently, and why?
Definitely Ozora in Hungary. The energy there is amazing. I was also impressed by how enthusiastic younger people were about old-school music at ZNA in Portugal. In Japan, I’d say Inochi no Matsuri and Tenjiku have both stood out.
ーI heard you’re starting a DJ Master Class. What inspired that?
A lot of people have asked me to teach them, and I’ve noticed that even some experienced DJs feel stuck and want help improving. That’s why I decided to create the Master Class – to give those DJs the guidance they need to grow.
ーCan you tell us about your main venue, Violetta?
I first went to Violetta for a talk show with Michiru, who also runs a DJ school there. It’s a great space – the sound system is top-notch, and it has that intimate, underground feel, which makes it a perfect place for the Master Class.
ーWhat will the Master Class focus on?
The idea is for DJs who’ve been at it for at least three years to do a simulation mix. I’ll give them detailed feedback to help them work through any challenges they’re facing and take their mixing to the next level.
ーWhat would you say to those planning to join the class?
I want them to really make the most of my experience and connections in the scene. I’m here to help with any issues they have, and the lessons will definitely give them tools for the future.
ーWhat advice do you have for younger people who want to become DJs?
It’s really important to be clear about what you want to express and what your goals are. That clarity makes all the difference.
ーMatsuri is celebrating its 30th anniversary, right? Congratulations! How has the journey been?
Thank you very much! Yes, I started Matsuri in London in 1994. After I moved to Tokyo in 2000. I started Matsuri Digital with YUTA, who now runs the techno label Liquid Drop Groove. Hiroko joined us at that time and she is now helping out with the label.
Since then we’ve done a lot of events and put out a lot of releases. As a label, we have UNI’s album coming out soon. So we’ll continue to deliver the unique worldview of Matsuri.
ーWhat are your future plans as a DJ and label owner?
I want to keep pushing forward with the revival of PRANA after all these years, and I’m excited about releasing more music, both mine and from other artists.
